12 months. 12 rolls of film. Throughout 2021, I set aside time each month to document my life with photos and a bit of written reflection. I’ve successfully finished that project, taking 432 35mm photos in total. Of course, not all of them were winners, and only a selection made it onto the blog.
I appreciated pausing to inspect my life through the camera viewfinder, freeze a moment of time, and then later arrange the photos and pair them with words. Through the course of the year, I’ve captured my moody periods in the depths of winter and pandemic restrictions as well as flashes of optimism, creativity, and gratitude.
I hope the subjects of my photos reflect what I prioritize. At the least, they obviously show what captures my attention. Many of my photos are of nature. I continue to be more and more delighted by the outdoors and want to spend more of my life among trees, lakes, and farms.
Most of the photos I took in December were dedicated to self-portraits as I look inward and reflect on this project and this year. I’m still figuring out my place in the world and how I can contribute to my community. I’d love to help, or at least not harm. I’d like to continue creating while consuming less. I want to hold myself accountable for directing my life, but also take time to pause and enjoy the moment—and give myself a break sometimes.
Thanks for taking the time to view these blogs—and the experiments, stumblings, and small wins documented within. Onward to a new year and new projects!
